The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System® is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. It was created by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)to define green buildings and promote integrated, whole-building design practices.
LEED offers four levels of certification that are determined by the number of credit points achieved in defined categories.
While LEED provides guidelines for designing and building environmentally responsible structures, not all sustainable practices are included in the system. As LEED continues to develop and evolve, it will likely include additional strategies not currently specified.
By choosing a sustainable carpet system, you have secured one component among a list of building materials that can contribute toward the design and certification of a LEED building. Because no product can be LEED certified, meeting the minimum credit requirements often requires the LEED team to specify a multitude of environmentally responsible products.
