Our carpet is more than certified

  1. Cradle to Cradle
  2. NSF 140
  3. CRI Green Label Plus

Waste simply doesn't exist. This is the concept behind Cradle to Cradle design, introduced by William McDonough and Michael Braungart and embraced by Patcraft. To make things bigger, stronger and in abundance, without wasting a single component.

Cradle to cradle is our approach to the way we make things. It's not about limiting the amount of bad that we do in the world, it's about doing something that's incredibly good - creating high-quality products that sacrifice nothing and actually benefit the environment.

Here's how it works: We use raw materials to make a product. That product gets purchased and used. After it's served its useful life, that product gets broken down into raw materials again and used to make the very same kind of products.

So raw materials make carpet, which gets broken down into raw material, which gets used to make carpet. Again and again. Forever.

This does two things: It drastically reduces the amount of used material going to landfills. And since that material is now returned to the manufacturing process, it drastically reduces the amount of raw materials we use, too. Instead of garbage, old products become chemical nutrients which nourish the production cycle endlessly.

Eco Solution Q fiber and EcoWorx backing are among the first Cradle to Cradle products in the world. In fact, Shaw offers an environmental guarantee stating that it will pick up any EcoWorx-backed material, free of charge, and recycle into more EcoWorx.

It almost seems too good to be true. But it's actually happening - right now.

Cradle to Cradle is open to a wide variety of products – not just carpet – which allows for stringent criteria during the evaluation process that does not focus on one industry in particular.

The categories used to evaluate products include:

  • Environmentally Safe and Healthy Materials
  • Efficient Use of Water and Maximum Water Quality
  • Use of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Instituting Strategies for Social Responsibilities
  • Design for Material Reutilization

Certified products must meet certain objectives within these categories to be certified, with additional items necessary to move from level to level. There are four certification levels:

  • Platinum
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Basic

Our Cradle to Cradle Silver Certified Product Systems:

  • Eco Solution Q type 6 nylon fiber
  • EcoWorx carpet tile backing
  • EcoWorx Broadloom and EcoWorx Performance Broadloom backing

From a design perspective, we manufacture carpet with the future in mind. And we are happy to offer future forward products that meet NSF-140 Sustainable Carpet Certification standards.

What is NSF-140?

NSF-140 is the flooring industry’s first consensus-based American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved sustainability certification for carpet. It was created to establish performance requirements for carpet to help our industry ensure clear standards for public health and environmental excellence, social responsibility and economic responsibility throughout the supply chain.

Which products are NSF-140 certified?

The following commercial product systems from Patcraft are NSF-140 certified:

  • EcoWorx tile – Platinum
  • EcoWorx Broadloom – Platinum
  • EcoWorx Performance Broadloom – Platinum
  • EcoLogix – Platinum
  • Ultraloc Pattern – Gold

Products that are NSF-140 certified can also contribute to a LEED Innovation in Design credit as follows:

  • LEED Silver - requires 5% of total materials cost for a project
  • LEED Gold - requires 2.5% of total materials cost for a project
  • LEED Platinum - requires 1.25% of total materials cost for a project

If you are looking for products that achieve NSF-140 certification and exceed your hopes for the future, look no further than Patcraft.

The CRI Green Label and Green Label Plus certifications evaluate emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in carpet, cushions and adhesives. By passing Green Label Plus standards, our carpet protects indoor air quality from VOCs, ensuring that our customers are purchasing the lowest emitting products on the market while protecting employees, patients and children.
