Like many manufacturers, we are mindful of the implications our manufacturing processes have on the environment. That is one reason why we have been committed to the Cradle to Cradle® design philosophy for more than 20 years. With a holistic approach to sustainability and alignment within the Cradle to Cradle Certified® assessment categories - Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Climate Protections, Water & Soil Stewardship and Social Fairness - we have continuously pushed ourselves to meet the stringent requirements set forth by the certification standard. Today, almost 90% of the products we manufacture are Cradle to Cradle Certified®.
But we know that meeting these standards is only the beginning.
A few areas we are most proud include:
- our assessment of over 1.8 billion pounds of materials for material health in 2020
- our Environmental Guarantee which has been instrumental in our ability to recycle nearly 1 billion pounds of carpet since 2006
- our joint venture with DAK Americas on Clear Path Recycling which allows us to recycle billions of plastic bottles each year
- and our water conservation efforts which have allowed us to minimize water use in our operation and manufacturing processes by 42% since 2010.
As the conversation about carbon and climate change increases among our customers and in the world around us, we are keenly aware of the opportunities to lower our carbon footprint, the efforts are not new to Patcraft. Since 2010, we have reduced the amount of carbon emissions created as a result of our operations by more than 50%. This includes Scope 1 - emissions generated from sources that are owned or controlled by our company - and Scope 2 - emissions that result from generation of the energy that we purchase. Additionally, since 2018, our entire commercial carpet operations are carbon neutral. In 2021, we launched our first carbon neutral carpet tile collection, Reverse, which also nets a lower embodied carbon footprint through the use of a 100% recycled yarn system (post-industrial content allocated from waste reduction efforts) and our EcoWorx® backing.
We know that our collective contributions help make a difference, which is why we are also proud signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, and are proud to participate in fellow UN Global Compact signatory’s Fill it Forward® campaign. Fill it Forward®’s overarching philosophy is the belief that choosing to reuse is a simple act of generosity that shows love for our planet and the people on it. Not only does our participation in Fill it Forward® help divert single-use plastic from landfills, but also allows us to collectively track our environmental impact as it relates to power saved and emissions saved by making the simple choice to reuse.
Just as we have enhanced our processes and understanding of environmental implications of our design and manufacturing for the past two decades, so too will we continue in the future. By consistent innovation and pushing ourselves to meet higher standards and tiers of the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Products Program and other environmental and global programs, and support of programs like Fill it Forward®, we hope to highlight our Inside Out approach to design, and re-emphasize that Materiality + Environmental Impact = Transformative Spaces.
